Giving Tuesday 2024

19% of residents live in poverty and cannot afford basic needs. Civil court clients do not have the right to a court appointed attorney, forcing them to pay for legal services they cannot afford.  Here is where you can help.

Frank's Story

Support Rebuilding Lives

Frank accrued damage to his roof from the 2020 hurricanes. Unfortunately, the underlying damage was more extensive than initially expected. The electrical system was compromised, causing a fire that destroyed his entire home. Frank sought help from RESTORE LA, however faced numerous complications during the process, and which prevented him from accessing funds to begin rebuilding his home.

ALSC attorneys handled RESTORE LA issues and contacted the Louisiana Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit to resolve Frank’s claim. While Frank was awarded a grant valued at $198,135, an overdue escrow payment of $3,794.43 blocked the full disbursement of funds so ALSC worked to reduce Frank’s payment amount down to $3.30. Frank is now on the path to rebuilding his home and finding a safe, stable place to live.

Heather's Story

Support Protection

For nearly three years, Heather fought for a judgment of divorce, custody of her children, and protection from abuse. She sought to divorce James and secure custody of their three children after he fled to another state with the children, forcing Heather to undertake the difficult process of bringing them home. Heather obtained temporary custody and protective orders following domestic abuse. James fled after being jailed for domestic abuse and other offenses.

ALSC took the lead to file for divorce, custody, and a permanent protective order under the Post-Separation Family Violence Relief Act.  At the fifth hearing due to delay after delay, the judge granted Heather sole custody of her children with no visitation for James, issued a permanent protective order, and ordered James to pay court costs. Finally, Heather and her children could move forward with safety and stability.

Charles' Story

Support a Future

Charles, a gunshot victim filed for disability after being shot three times. While in the hospital, he suffered a stroke and was in a coma for a week. Charles went through extensive rehabilitation to relearn how to live, all the while being paralyzed on his left side. Deeply concerned about his health and future, Charles was devastated when his disability request was denied.

ALSC secured life-changing disability benefits and peace of mind by helping Charles file for reconsideration. Our paralegal advocate gathered medical records to prove his need for disability assistance, advocated for him at an official hearing and guided him through the process. Their efforts led to a favorable decision, and Charles was awarded over $20,000 in backpay. He will continue to receive benefits each month moving forward. Now, Charles can live without worrying about his future and can focus on his health.
