Disaster Preparedness Legal Tips #1 Lost Documents

May is the time for Louisiana to prepare for the fast approaching hurricane season! Our dedicated ALSC Disaster Unit is providing legal tips for hurricane season all month! We want to remind you the importance of keeping track of all of your important documents.  Lost documents can potentially slow down the disaster recovery process. It is key to make copies and keep important documents at your home and possibly another location to ensure access to them easily.

Some of these documents include:

  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Divorce certificates
  • Custody and/or adoption papers
  • Wills and/or powers of attorney
  • Tax documents
  • Property deeds
  • Passports
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Personal IDs
  • Social Security Cards
  • Financial documents
  • Banking information and statements
  • Debit and credit card numbers
  • Medical records, prescription information, primary care doctor information
  • Vaccine and veterinary records for all household pets
  • Family photos and mementos

We recommend keeping these or copies of these in a zippered waterproof pouch or box and easy to access at any time. These documents are necessary to access legal aid, disaster aid, and help you fast track your disaster recovery process.
