Supporting Families Through Lifes's Legal Challenges

We provide legal help with divorce, custody, child and spousal support, adoption, and domestic violence. We work to protect survivors, stabilize families, and ensure the safety and well-being of children – helping families move forward with strength, dignity, and long-term security.

Custody

Custody decisions are always based on the best interest of the child. Courts look at things like which parent takes care of the child most, each parent’s health, parenting skills, and if they support the child’s bond with the other parent.

Joint Custody

Joint custody is typically the best for both parents. One parent is chosen to take care of the child most of the time. Both parents must work together to make decisions and share information about the child.

Sole Custody

Sole custody is rare and only given when the court decides one parent is unfit, usually because they harmed the child. That parent may still get supervised visits but cannot make decisions for the child.

Custody Order

To change a custody order, there must be a big change in the family’s situation. The court must also find that a new arrangement is better for the child and less harmful than the current custody order.

Divorce

A divorce can be granted for several reasons. These include living apart for six months (without children) or one year (with children), planning to live apart after filing, domestic violence, a felony conviction, or adultery.

Non-Parent Custody

A non-parent can ask for custody of a child in some cases. They must prove in court that the child is in serious danger while living with the parents.

Child Support

Both parents must support their child, and how much each pays depends on their income and the child’s needs – not who has custody. ALSC helps with child support during divorce or custody cases, but for other help, the state’s support agency, DCFS, has more resources.

Domestic Violence

If you or your minor child are a victim of domestic violence by a spouse or partner, contact the police and go to a safe place to ensure you and your minor child’s safety first. Be sure to contact an attorney to help you evaluate your options. Below are resources that directly related to organizations that provide help and shelter if you are a victim of domestic violence.

Providing A Future

Sam’s STORY

After being incarcerated and falling behind on child support, Sam was unable to see his daughter. When she reached out to reconnect, Sam, now a full-time student, worked to create a stable environment and sought help from ALSC to request visitation rights. With ALSC’s support, he was granted consistent visits, which eventually led to joint custody. Sam’s story demonstrates that even in challenging times, hope can flourish through commitment and stability.
