Work independently and as part of a team to obtain positive results for clients with a focus on civil law matters that include: Family Law, Child in Need of Care, Disaster Recovery, Domestic Violence, Public Benefits, Elder Law, Successions, Housing, and Consumer Law positions that are available in Alexandria, Franklin, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Monroe, Natchitoches, and Shreveport.  Candidates must have strong organizational and communication skills, be comfortable interacting with low income clients, and be able to learn electronic case management system

Description

The Intake Unit (IU) is responsible for all points of client access to Acadiana Legal Service Corporation’s services. The Intake Specialists work under the direction of the Intake Unit Managing Attorney and in partnership with Pro Bono Attorneys to further the firm’s purposes and goals. The primary purpose of ALSC is to provide quality legal assistance in an efficient manner to the eligible low-income, disadvantaged, and otherwise vulnerable clients in our service area.

General Duties

  • Interviewing applicants to establish what services may assist them using a respectful, empathetic and trauma informed process.
  • Conduct intake interviews by phone, in person, or by other means including but not limited to outreach and off-site client drives.
  • Respond to online applications for legal services.
  • Perform eligibility screening according to the ALSC Eligibility Standards as well as conflict checks.
  • Schedule clients for call-backs.
  • Gather critical information from each potential client and relay information to attorneys to decide on the next best step for the potential client.
  • Prepare all new incoming client information/documentation for prompt client contact by our ALSC limited representation attorneys.
  • Prepare files for review and acceptance by Pro Bono attorneys working in partnership with but outside of ALSC.
  • Open new case files in case management software.
  • Creates contemporaneous timekeeping records pursuant to program requirements.
  • Provide potential clients with accurate legal information for referral to other agencies as needed under the supervision of a supervising attorney.
  • Prepare legal documents to support the delivery of services by the Staff Attorney.
  • Other duties as determined by Program needs, such as testing and building the intake process and providing support to other ALSC Units in a paralegal capacity.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior intake experience.
  • Prior experience working in legal aid, the court system or a law office that handles civil cases in serving low-income populations.
  • Excellent telephone interviewing skills. • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to quickly take in and apply new knowledge.
  • Able to work with difficult people and de-escalate disagreements.
  • Good sense of judgment.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required.
  • This position may allow for the ability to at times work remotely, especially if it is outside of normal business hours.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Strong ability to navigate computer, software, internet, and phone systems.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate over the phone and email.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary of $22,622 is negotiable depending on experience. Candidates with more experience can expect a higher range salary.
